VDO Live, similar to PN's RealVideo is a technology for serving and viewing integrated video and audio.
The company was founded in 1995, with Microsoft as one of the main investors.

The new thing is the usage of so called "scalable" technology, optimized for the Internet since it adjusts to the available bandwidth on the fly.

The side incharged for the measuring the bandwidth available to the user at any given point is the server. The intelligent server is by this responsible for optimization of picture quality at specific bandwidth.

To accomplish this VDO Live uses two technologies:

• scalable compression algorithm, which not only successfully compress video for Internet bandwidths, but also allows the quality of video to increase with the size and quality of the connection at the other end.
• set of communication protocols which maintain the integrity of audio and video over unstable Internet connections.

Although VDOnet promotes industry standards such as ITU's H.324 and H.323 in its VDOPhone, other products including VDO Live is a typical custom product, with almost no specifications.

However, over 5 million downloaded players ensure that the VDO media is viewable to many users. At this point largest collection of streaming video material on the Internet is in VDO Live format.

With VDO Live live server, recently introduced, live transmissions are possible.

The set of products include:

• VDO Live Broadcast station, used for encoding of live video, and transmitting it to group of clients or, more often, the server.
• VDO Live Broadcast Server, used to increase the number of concurrent video streams and control the transmission.
• VDO Live Broadcast Network, established to allow wider audience to more easily view the material, by distributing VDO Live Servers worldwide.
