Classic multimedia - video
Three most common video file formats for years were
- MPEG, which stands
for the Motion Picture Experts Group - the ISO standard for video compression
used basically for bandwidths of 1.2 Mbps and over,
- MOV - Quicktime Movie - Apple's format and
- Microsoft's AVI file type.
All of them were created before the growth of Internet, and were not created with Internet on
mind.

Using clever dynamical .MOV player such as QuickTime, user should have some 200 Kbps
(25 Kilobytes per second) to experience real time download and play for a typical MOV. Since
usual bandwidths are 10 times lower, in recent times other formats and technologies have
appeared. Some of them are pseudo-streaming such as VIVO, and some are streaming such as
RealAudio and RealVideo by Progressive Networks.
