Talk: Anatom3D: Building an Open-Source 3D Anatomy Learning Platform from the Ground Up

Medical and health science education faces a persistent gap between the anatomical knowledge students need and the immersive, interactive tools available to them. Most 3D anatomy software is either prohibitively expensive, locked behind institutional licenses, or insufficiently detailed for rigorous academic use.

Anatom3D is an open-source anatomy learning platform built in Unity, currently in active development, targeting students of medicine, stomatology, and kinesiology. This talk covers the ongoing lifecycle of building and sustaining an open-source educational tool, from early architectural decisions and contributor onboarding to navigating institutional adoption across Croatian universities in Zagreb, Rijeka, and Osijek.

We discuss the challenges specific to open-source medical education software: maintaining scientific accuracy under community contributions, coordinating between volunteer developers and domain experts (anatomists, clinicians), and designing a contribution workflow that lowers the barrier for non-programmers. We also share early lessons from a quasi-experimental study with medical students currently being designed to validate learning outcomes, and what that process is already revealing about community trust-building in academic settings.

The project is still being shaped, and that is the point. Attendees will leave with practical patterns for community-driven development in education-adjacent domains, a candid look at the open questions we have not solved yet, and an invitation to contribute.
